Professor of Primary Care Cardiology, Durham University
Professor Ahmet Fuat PhD FRCGP FRCP PG DiP graduated from Aberdeen University Medical School in 1982 and has been in general practice in Darlington, Durham, since 1986. As well as being a GP, postgraduate GP tutor, GP appraiser and CCG Cardiology Lead, he also works as a GP Specialist in cardiology and, for 14 years, he has run an integrated heart failure service across primary and secondary care. Holding a PhD from Durham University, he is an active researcher in cardiology and was recently awarded an Honorary Chair in Primary Care Cardiology from Durham University School of Health, Medicine and Pharmacy. He has published widely on primary care and cardiovascular topics.
Professor Fuat sits on the editorial boards of both the British Journal of Cardiology and the Primary Care Cardiovascular Journal. He is a tutor on the Bradford University Postgraduate Diploma in Cardiology and on the Sunderland University Cardiovascular course for nurses. He chairs and lectures in cardiology nationally (including BMJ Masterclasses, RCGP Cardiovascular essentials and Mediconf symposia). Professor Fuat has also served on the NICE and European Society of Cardiology guideline development groups on acute and chronic heart failure and on myocardial infarction respectively. He is acting chair of CVGP (Society for Professionals with an interest in Cardiovascular disease in General Practice) C.I.C.
Professor Fuat has acted as an advisor to Servier, MSD, Pfizer, Bayer Health, Daiichi Sankyo, Roche Diagnostics, Alere and Boehringer Ingelheim. He has attended medical conferences sponsored by Boehringer Ingelheim and MSD, and has received research grants from Servier, Roche Diagnostics and Heart Research UK.
